Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has publicly announced his decision to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to dedicate himself to humanitarian work. In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Gyan, who holds the record as Ghana’s top goalscorer, expressed regret over his political involvement, acknowledging that his affiliation with a political party had not been beneficial to the youth of Ghana. He explained that he would be stepping away from political activities to focus on independent efforts aimed at empowering the youth through his Asamoah Gyan Foundation.
This change comes after his active participation in the NPP’s activities earlier in the year. In February 2024, just weeks after attending the campaign launch of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s Presidential Candidate, Gyan was appointed as the chairman of Bawumia’s Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee. More recently, in August, he was seen alongside the vice president during a campaign walk in Akropong, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
However, in his statement, the 38-year-old former football star acknowledged that his involvement in partisan politics had not been in the best interest of Ghanaian youth. He emphasized his intention to no longer engage in political activities and to focus solely on his humanitarian work. Gyan also wished all political parties a peaceful election ahead of the country’s December 7 polls, reiterating his commitment to helping the youth in his own way, without political ties. “God bless our homeland Ghana,” he concluded in his heartfelt statement.
