In a release made by the University Teachers Association of Ghana dated 9th October, 2024 with Reference UTAGN/2024/V0l.2/0075, the National Executive Council (NEC) of UTAG stated an industrial action against mining in forest reserves, farms, and water bodies.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has successfully completed a referendum on initiating industrial action to back a nationwide prohibition on mining and prospecting for minerals, including gold, in forest reserves, farmlands, and rivers. The referendum saw participation from all 15 UTAG Member Branches, with a total of 2,762 members casting their votes. The outcome of the voting is as follows:
- YES: 2,153 votes (77.95%)
- NO: 607 votes (21.98%)
- ABSTAIN: 2 votes (0.07%)
With an overwhelming 77.95% majority voting in favor, the National Independent Elections Committee (NIEC) has officially declared the motion passed. This result underscores the strong commitment of UTAG members to protect Ghana’s environment and safeguard livelihoods from the harmful effects of mining in ecologically sensitive areas such as forest reserves, agricultural lands, and water bodies.
Following this decisive outcome, NEC called an emergency meeting in accordance with Article XIX, Clause 5 of the UTAG Constitution. As per this mandate, NEC unanimously agreed to declare an indefinite strike, effective from October 10, 2024, across all 15 UTAG branches. This strike will continue until the government announces a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting in protected areas, including forest reserves, farmlands, and rivers.
NEC calls on all UTAG members to adhere strictly to this decision and join the industrial action. This collective stance demonstrates UTAG’s determination to stand up for the protection of Ghana’s natural resources, ensuring the sustainability of its ecosystems and the livelihoods that depend on them. UTAG is resolved to remain on strike until a firm government commitment is made to preserve these vulnerable areas from the devastation caused by mining activities.
Thank you for your unwavering dedication and continued support in this significant national cause. Together, UTAG remains steadfast in advocating for the preservation of our environment for future generations.
